Nowadays almost everyone known about FMGE as a hedge for all final-year medical students, specially who were studying medical course in any foreign country. FMGE stands for Foreign Medical Graduates Examination, is a licensing examination for foreign medical graduates, conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) in India and it is also known as MCI (Medical Council of India). The FMGE was introduced through Screening Test Regulations 2002 of the Medical Council of India (MCI). This screening test is mandatory requirement for Indian citizen who has a medical degree from outside college of India, but want to practice medicine in this country.

FMGE exam is conducted biannually in the month of June and December by the National Board of Examinations. The latest FMGE exam pattern 2022 by NBE mentions that the exam will be conducted in two parts – Part A and B. Each part will be of 2 hours and 30 minutes (Total duration 5 hours).
Basically, this is computer-based (online) test and have total 300 multiple choice questions, based on the MBBS curriculum [where total 200 questions come from Clinical subjects and others 100 questions coming from Pre-clinical & Para-clinical]. To pass the FMGE exam, candidates need to secure at least 150 marks out of 300. For every correct answer, one mark will be awarded (there is no negative mark for incorrect answer).
And yes, only eligible candidates are allowed to appear in the FMGE who have the Provisional Pass Certificate/Degree Certificate of Primary Medical Qualification.
National Exit Examination (NExT) :
But, the plan of the government is making a single window examination which is the NEXT (National Exit Examination) medical exam and it is replace with NEET PG & MCI screening test. Basically, NEXT will also serve as the purpose of Screening Test for Foreign Medical Graduates who are now required to qualify MCI (Medical Council of India) Screening Test or, FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduates Examination) for admission into postgraduate medical courses or practicing medicine in India. It was introduced by the National Medical Commission Bill 2019. However, this exam is not yet implemented, maybe it (NEXT) will happen in the year 2023 for the batch of 2018-19 medical students. Before that, for all Foreign Medical Graduates have to pass in FMGE if they want to practice Medicine in India.NExT Exam Eligibility :
You don’t need to worry about the requirements. It is a very minimal criteria for any and every medical graduate. If you want to get clear idea regarding this so follow the points which we mention below:- Firstly, students need to clear the MBBS program, with at least 50 percent marks in your MBBS.
- Indian medical students need to undertake the internship after passing the NEXT-1 exam.
- o take the NEXT-2 exam students must clear the NEXT-1 exam.
NExT Exam Pattern :
The NEXT Exam Pattern is still in the proposal and NBE will declare the final pattern soon. So far it is known that the test is conducted in two phases NEXT-1 and NEXT-2. It will be a comparatively longer exam than the FMGE and NEET PG exams, NEXT- 1 will be held for 3 days. The examination paper for NEXT entrance is divided into 6 parts. Every day consists of a morning pre-lunch session of 3 hours and an afternoon post-lunch session of 1.5 hours.NExT – 1
- NEXT-1 will be conducted for final year aspirants after the final year MBBS before the internship.
- This part will be Online MCQ based, 540 Multiple choice questions will be in the question paper.
- The Score of the NEXT-1 exam will be valid for up to 2 years
- NEXT-1 includes major subjects, minor subjects, and allied subjects.
- The Next-1 score is allow to do internship & will get a PG seat after NEXT- 2 pass.
- If you fail the Next -1, you are not eligible to participate in the internship program. You can re-appear for the examination.
NExT – 2
- Students who successfully pass NEXT-1 only they can assemble to clear NEXT-2.
- Whereas, this part will be online based oral and practical examination to check the basic practical knowledge.
- NEXT-2 exam will be organized after an internship.
- After passing NEXT- 2, you will get the license to practice in India or you can apply for a postgraduate program in medicine.
- If you fail, then you are not allowed for PG seat. In that case you have to wait for 1 year to take NEXT -2 exam.
- It intends to regulate the quality of students aspiring to be MBBS doctors.
- Thanks to the NEXT Exam, there aren’t separate exams to be held for foreign graduate doctors as they will get a practice license if they pass the National Exit Test. Indians Medical Graduates have to take the NEXT exams along with them.
